after yesterday's winter storm... flights are taking off once again from the des moines international airport. good evening, i'm jodi whitworth in for sonya and dan tonight... the snow grounded flights at the airport as iowa hawkeye fans were ready to fly to california for the rose bowl... many fans were worried, they wouldn't get to the game at all... but that's changing... josh nguyen joins us live from the airport.. and josh... good news for many travelers. jodi this has been a busy place over the past couple days.... a lot of hawkeye fans have ask the same question. is my flight going to be on time to
'the charter flights have gone in and gone out so far today on time and without any problems. we have 7 charter flights going to the rosebowl. we had 4 today and 3 more tomorrow. i anticipate that will operate without and problems as long as the weather goes like it is today.' the airport also told us that many fans didn't want risk it and wait for the flights to be rescheduled. so they opted to rent cars and drive to different airports. but they assured me that the crews did everything they needed to on their end to clean the run way. we caught up with some fans getting ready... dave shrogen is a pastor from johnston and even his faith was tested on getting to california in time. 215519 'well we were nervous knew we were going to go one way or another. we know that we arent going to be
we were gonna get there.' the airport expects no further delays and the chartered flights taking fans tonight and tomorrow should be good to go. the winter storm was also tricky for drivers in central iowa... the iowa state patrol responded to 70 accidents from midnight monday... to six this morning. troopers also helped 265 drivers who were stranded, broke down or in the ditch. that was for dallas, polk, jasper, marshall, story, and boone counties. the interstate is looking much better now than this time yesterday. the iowa d-o-t show roads are back to seasonal conditions, meaning the roads are mostly clear, but could still be some slick spots and not only are the roads in better shape, so is our weather. meteorologist brett mcintyre joins us now... no snow for the evening commute,
mostly cloudy skies will continue across the state overnight. a few more snow showers may pass through on wednesday morning. this may bring an additional trace to one inch of snow. all will be done by noon. the new year's holiday will be very cold. temperatures will reach the teens on thursday afternoon and drop to the single digits by early new year's day morning. the weekend will be dry and
firefighters in des moines were busy today... after battling two fires within half an hour of each other the first -- broke out around two this afternoon... at 12-19 herold avenue. smoke was pouring from the windows... a small dog was rescued from the home... and was given oxygen... he is expected to survive. no body was hurt in the fire... crews are still looking in to what may have caused it. firefighters were then called to a shed fire in the 53-hundred block of south east 5 -th street.
time as firefighters tamed the flames. the cause of this fire is also under investigation. the community is coming together for a young woman killed in a bus accident in chicago. 21-year old nicole underwood was from des moines and was a university of iowa student. she was riding a charter bus to see her boyfriend, when it crashed on interstate 55 just miles from its destination yesterday. two go fund me pages are now set up in her name. underwood's boyfriend and two others set up a scholarship fund to go to the university of iowa. another was created by a friend to help the family... weather kept volunteers from delivering meals yesterday in dallas county... but the recipients didn't go without. home care services deliver hot meals to people in need all over dallas county... with the snow storm, volunteers were not sent out for safety reasons. but organizers have a plan... days before the storm hit, frozen meals and "shelf stable meals" were
